New legislation passed in 1999 (House Bill 2307) required the creation of the Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certificate as part of the Texas Reading Initiative. The purpose of the certificate is to ensure that all Texas students are reading on grade level by the end of the third grade and that their reading knowledge and skills grow throughout their public school careers.
Students must have a Texas teaching certificate, at least three years of teaching experience, complete the Master Reading Teacher preparation program, and pass the Master Reading Teacher certification exam.Teachers who successfully complete the MRTCP and teach on a "high needs" campus designated by the Commissioner of Education may be eligible for a $5,000 stipend. For more information, and for an alphabetical list by district name of "high needs" campuses, visit the TEA website.
Use the Course Catalog to find course descriptions, instructor information, and when the courses will be offered. See Academic Calendars for deadlines.
